Let Malaysia Police Support Demo Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian police suddenly allow supporters of former Deputy Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to demonstrate support for him, which will be imposed following his conviction related to Anwar's sodomy case.

The verdict was rumored to be issued by the Court of Malaysia next week. Permits are rarely issued by Malaysia, given the security authorities give permission generally little protest.

The plan is one hundred thousand supporters of Anwar will do a demonstration in front of the High Court of Kuala Lumpur, Monday, January 9 next. If the court decides guilt, then most likely he would be threatened with imprisonment of 20 years.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Mohmad Salleh had admitted meeting with colleagues from Anwar today. "We will monitor the situation (as demo) to ensure that the activity will take place orderly," said Salleh was quoted as saying by AFP on Friday (01/06/2011).

While Vice Chairman of People's Justice Party, Azmin Ali, said the police permit is the first time that happened. Because in the past, the police always refused to permit that they always ask.

"At the meeting, I was given assurance that the police would give permission. It is based on our ability to organize the masses at the time (demo) without any provocation from the parties who are not responsible," said Azmin Ali.

Ali said the approximately 500 members they will be deployed to ensure the protest would take place safely. They certainly look forward to the freedom of Anwar Ibrahim.

Anwar faced with cases of alleged sodomy by a former aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan. But he continued to plead not guilty. He even accused the Malaysian government on charges of conspiracy, with intent to prevent it returning to politics.
