Make Meeting, 17 Malaysian Students Arrested

\ KUALA LUMPUR-Malaysian police conduct forcible dissolution of the dozens of students who were meeting in a university in the state of Perak, Malaysia.

In addition police also arrested 17 students, while a student had to be rushed to hospital after being kicked officers.

"We were quite surprised by acts of violence committed by the police. We believe that detention is a form of intimidation to other students," said activist who is also an Opposition leader N. Surendran, told AFP on Sunday,
(01/01/2011).

Dozens of students gathered to demand academic freedom, such as the elimination of rules that forbid them from joining or supporting political parties.

Associated with the detention of students, Malaysian police chief Mohamad Shukri Dahlan insisted, student resistance to the officers that had to do detention.

"We are taking necessary measures to maintain public safety," he added.

Earlier Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, promised to give greater civil liberties and reforming the Security Act are deemed undemocratic.

But analysts caution, Prime Minister Najib Razak has broken his promise with the event's 17 students detention. (
