Nigerian Government Announces Emergency

Abuja-President of Nigeria Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in Nigeria, particularly the area north and central Nigeria.

The announcement came following a bombing blamed on militant groups involved in the celebration of Christmas Boko Haram. The bombing led to 39 people were killed.

In addition to involvement in the bombings, militant Boko Haram is also accused of being behind the clashes that occurred last Saturday. Clashes that sparked the dispute related to this land developed into inter-ethnic violence involving the Group and Group Ezilo Ezza. Approximately 50 people were allegedly killed in these clashes.

"Over the long term solution has not been found, the Government will take some decisive action needed to make things back to normal, especially the affected communities," said President Jonathan as quoted by Al Jazeera on Sunday (01/01/2012).

Furthermore, President Jonathan said he would order the closure of international borders located on the northern and southern Nigeria.

"Closing the border is only a temporary measure to overcome the security turmoil that was happening now," he added.

During his visit to the site of the bombing in the Catholic Church of St.. Theresa, Madalla, last Saturday, President Jonathan has vowed he will destroy Boko Haram is pointed at as a terrorist group.

Boko Haram appears as the most dangerous militants in Nigeria, not infrequently attacks killed dozens of deaths in that country. The militant group also had time to do the bombing at the offices of the United Nations (UN) in the city of Abuja, killing 24 people.
